Happy Monday sweet wonderful world! I'm sure many people have heard of Kombucha, maybe even seen it, or hey maybe you've drank it too! If not there's a ton of reasons you may start drinking it, besides the fact that it is pretty delicious, that is if you like the taste of vinegar with a hint of other flavors. Ha. What exactly is Kombucha, besides another health drink, you ask. Well, I'll tell you! Kombucha has actually been around for for thousands of years and was called the "Immortal Health Elixer" by the Ancient Chinese. It is made from the fermentation of a mixture of sweetened tea (usually Black or Green tea) and a Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast, or a SCOBY. It has been to known to be effective in reducing risks of certain health problems and promoting overall health. There's no question about the immunity boosting effects, detoxifying nature or energizing properties it has. Kombucha is rich an antioxidants and B vitamins, which explains the immunity boost and energizing effect. It's rich in many of the enzymes and bacterial acids that your body produces and/or uses to detoxify your body, which explains its detoxifying nature. There also have been many other health claims about Kombucha that I read about recently. However, they are claims, meaning they have not been scientifically researched or proven in the U.S., at least not yet. Some of the claims include: cancer prevention because Kombucha is very high in Glucaric acid; joint care and strong prevention/treatment of all forms of arthritis because of it contains glucosamines; improved digestion due to the fact that it is a probiotic beverage; mental clarity and mood stability. Overall even if the claims are not all true, (They could be though ; ) Perhaps they will be eventually studied and proven or disproved one day.) it still is a fantastic detoxifying and energizing beverage loading with probiotics, B vitamins and wonderfulness. One tip, if you do decide to try it: make sure it is Raw Organic and produced in a sterile clean closed environment. Some brands I recommend are: GT's and Kombucha Brooklyn. There are definitely other brands that are great as well, just do your research! Same goes for if you want to make your own. : ) ![]() Today I made a Blueberry Ginger Kombucha Smoothie. I think this actually my favorite and simplest smoothie to make. It wakes you up and energizes you for the day. Blueberries are also bursting with antioxidants and are a great supplier of fiber and Vitamin C! Below is the recipe for the smoothie. Blueberry Ginger Kombucha Smoothie 1 Cup Fresh Blueberries 3/4 Cup Ginger Kombucha (GT's Organic Raw Gingerade Kombucha) 1 Cup Ice Blend the blueberries, the Kombucha, and the ice in a NutriBullet or similar blending device; pour into your favorite glass. Really though, there are numerous reason why quinoa is such an awesome food, but I'm going to list just seven that I have come across. 1. It's rich in PROTEIN; it is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids, including Lysine (essential for tissue growth and repair,) which makes the protein levels in quinoa comparable to that in milk. (Mooo-ve over Mr. Cow. Had to, Ha.) 2. Contains TWICE as much FIBER as most other grains. Yup, totally a sweet gift for grandma or that girl down the street with the caked on make-up, who claims, "She doesn't poop; girls don't poop." You should be highly concerned about her and feed her some quinoa because it can help relieve her apparent life long constipation. #shithappens On a more serious note, fiber helps lower cholesterol and glucose levels. And, wait it gets better; it reduces blood pressure, helping to prevent heart disease. 3. Contains IRON; which keeps our red blood cells healthy and happy (I added that "happy" research in. ; ) It is also the basis for hemoglobin formation. Iron aids in neurotransmitter synthesis, regulations of body temperature, enzyme activity and energy metabolism. (Again, Mooo-ve over Bessie.) Perfect Iron source for Vegans and Vegetarians, and everyone else who doesn't want to eat Bessie. 4. Reduces Migraines; high in RIBOFLAVIN (Vitamin B2,) which improves energy metabolism within the brain and muscle cells, also promoting blood vessel expansion in the brain and reduces the instances of migraine headaches. Also, high in MAGNESIUM, which aides in the formation of healthy bones and teeth, as well as relaxing blood vessels to alleviate migraines. 5. High in MANGANESE, an ANTIOXIDANT, which helps to prevent damage to the mitochondria during energy production and protects red blood cells from injury from free radicals. 6. It's GLUTEN-FREE, it's a great grain option for those that suffer from Celiac disease or gluten intolerance. 7. Energizing SUPERFOOD. It's an ancient grain that the Inca Warriors widely consumed for energy, strength, and speedy muscle recover. #BeAWarrior There you have it. Quinoa is in fact awesome.
